Individuals who are represented by a registered tax agent will often have a personal tax return filing deadline that is the 15th of May following the end of the tax year.
This can be extended to the 5th of June as a concession in certain circumstances – notably if the tax return is lodged and any tax payable is settled by the 5th of June.
This is a concessional arrangement whereby the Australian Taxation Office will not seek failure to lodge on time penalties .
Because of the exceptional circumstances this year the ATO has advised that no late lodgment penalties will be imposed for returns lodged by registered tax agents by the 30th of June 2020.
While the general interest charge will still be applicable tax agents can apply for remissions; the ATO has advised that it will take a reasonable approach in assessing the request.
